Gamabunta

Toads

Toads are the first and most recurring summons to be seen in the series due to some of the main characters, Naruto Uzumaki, Jiraiya, and the Fourth Hokage, being able to summon them. Toads possess a wide range of abilities, being able to spit water or oil from their mouths and occasionally utilizing weapons in battle. They vary greatly in size; Gamabunta (ガマブン太), the largest toad seen so far, is as big as a building, while his two sons, Gamakichi (ガマ吉) and Gamatatsu (ガマ竜), are small enough in Part I to ride upon one’s head. In promotional artwork for Part II, Naruto is depicted riding atop an older Gamakichi, suggesting that he and his brother have gotten much bigger since their last appearances.

Unlike most summons introduced in Naruto, each toad is shown to have a unique personality; Gamatatsu has a fixation for snacks and Gamakichi enjoys watching battles from a safe distance. Their father, Gamabunta, speaks like a yakuza gangster who won’t work with anyone he doesn’t respect. Despite this, he is fiercely protective of his children and Naruto, and will fight for their safety regardless of his respect for the summoner (or, more likely, whether or not Jiraiya is on his good side). Gamaken (ガマケン), a toad of comparable size to Gamabunta that is introduced in Part II, spends the bulk of his brief appearance commenting on how weak and stupid he is.

The toad elders seem to hold high positions in toad-society; the Great Toad Sage, an aging and senile toad, hands out wisdom and predictions to the younger generations. He is highly respected for his track record of always being right, and getting to meet with him is considered a great honor. A married toad couple, who simply refer to each other as Ma and Pa, assist the Great Sage in his work. They also seem to be particularly powerful, as Jiraiya summons them to help him during a battle with Pain. Jiraiya speaks to both of them very respectfully, whereas most other toads he treats as his equals. Although Ma and Pa constantly bicker over such things as dinner and Jiraiya’s immaturity, their combined efforts are enough to defeat three of Pain’s bodies.

Masashi Kishimoto has stated that there are a number of different types of toads; the toad that appears on the cover of volume 13 of the manga he states to be a Shaolin kung fu master. He hopes to be able to draw many of these toads for the duration of Naruto.[12]

Gato

Gato (ガトー Gatō?) is a powerful shipping magnate whose shipping company is actually a front for smuggling illegal goods and dealing drugs. He takes control of the Land of Waves’ shipping routes and creates a monopoly by isolating the country from the outside world, preventing free import and export and turning it into a poor, hunger-stricken country in the process. Gato hires Zabuza Momochi and his subordinates to assassinate Tazuna and stop him from finishing to build a bridge that would allow the Land of Waves’ economy to recover. However, after Zabuza is defeated by Kakashi Hatake, Gato assumes that Zabuza is no longer able to accomplish his mission and decides to use his own thugs to kill Tazuna instead. Rather than allow Gato to have his way, Zabuza kills him, freeing the country from Gato’s rule and allowing the bridge to be completed.

H letter characters in Naruto.

Haku

Haku (白) was born during a time when people with a kekkei genkai were feared. Because Haku’s mother possessed such an ability, so too did Haku. Once Haku’s father learned of this he rallied a small mob and had his wife murdered. He would have done the same to Haku, but Haku inadvertently killed both the mob and his father via his kekkei genkai. Orphaned, Haku wandered the country as a beggar child until he was found by Zabuza Momochi. Zabuza took Haku in as a tool of battle and nothing more. For his part, Haku readily accepted this role due to the purpose it gave him, devoting his life to becoming the ultimate weapon for Zabuza. In time, Haku became fiercely protective of his master, so much so that he would not allow anyone to touch Zabuza. He wears dresses and looks like a girl so much that Naruto confused him with a girl when they met prior to their battle. In his devotion to Zabuza, Haku finds purpose in life only by being of use to Zabuza, and does whatever is asked of him to continue to give his own life meaning. When he is defeated by Naruto Uzumaki, Haku feels as though his reason for living is gone as he is no longer of use to his master. His moment of abandonment is short lived, as he is soon able to give up his life to protect Zabuza from Kakashi Hatake’s Lightning Blade.

Haku’s kekkei genkai, Hyoton (氷遁 Hyōton?, literally “Ice Release”), allows him to mix wind and water to create ice. Haku’s ice is reinforced by chakra, making normally effective methods of melting ice, namely fire, practically useless. Haku’s signature attack with this ability is his Demonic Ice Mirrors (魔鏡氷晶 Makyō Hyō Shō?, English TV “Secret Jutsu: Crystal Ice Mirrors”), which creates any number of mirrors made of ice to trap opponents. Haku can freely merge with and move between these mirrors, allow him to attack opponents from multiple angle simultaneously. Haku is also skilled with senbon, and can incapacitate or kill a person with a single senbon. Despite these abilities, Haku dislikes needing to kill in his role as a tool, and avoids doing so whenever possible. When forced to face an opponent Haku does all that he can to avoid bringing them great harm, even putting them into a death-like state to prevent them from fighting further.

Hanzo

  • Age: ? (deceased)

Hanzo (半蔵 Hanzō?) is the former leader of Amegakure whose abilities are renowned and recognized by ninja everywhere. At some point in time he fought with Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. When they proved able to survive his attacks he rewarded their skills by sparing their lives and giving them the title of the “Legendary Three Ninja” (伝説の三忍 Densetsu no Sannin?) to indicate that they were the strongest ninja in Konoha. Despite his immense power, Hanzo was very cautious when it came to his own security, and as such getting a chance to see him was a great feat. Sometime later, Hanzo, as well as his family, friends, and affiliates, were killed by Pain, allowing the latter to take control of Amegakure.[5]

Hayate Gekko

Hayate Gekko (月光 ハヤテ Gekkō Hayate?) is the examiner of the preliminary matches during the Chunin Exams. At first sight, Hayate appears to not be in the best of health, as he has an unexplained chronic cough and bags under his eyes. This appearance is misleading; despite his sickly complexion he is very skilled for his age, being capable of using shadow clones and swordsmanship together in a battle with great ease. Hayate is the first to discover the secret invasion plan between the Sound and the Sand, though before he can tell Konoha of this he is killed by Baki.

Despite his short appearance and small role in the series, Hayate was very popular with fans, placing eighth in the second Naruto character popularity poll.[8]

Hiashi Hyuga

Hiashi Hyuga (日向 ヒアシ Hyūga Hiashi?) is the twin brother of Hizashi Hyuga. Because he was born first, he became a member and eventual leader of the Hyuga clan’s main house. He initially intended to pass this title onto his daughter, Hinata Hyuga, yet felt Hinata was of too inferior talent to give her such an honor. Since abandoning Hinata to train her younger sister instead, Hiashi has come to appreciate family more, and treats Hinata better than he once did. He also improves relationships with the clan’s branch house by training Hizashi’s son, Neji Hyuga, in violation of a Hyuga taboo of passing on clan secrets to branch house members.

Hidan

Hidan (飛段?) is the foul-mouthed partner of Kakuzu and is the second newest member of Akatsuki at the time of his expulsion.[4] Hidan belongs to the Jashin (“evil god”) religion, a religion that worships a deity of the same name and where anything less than utter destruction is considered a sin.[53] Before battles start, Hidan prays to Jashin and asks for nothing short of a kill or, when he is not allowed to kill his opponents, for forgiveness.[54] After battles, should he have time, Hidan performs a thirty-minute ritual in accordance with his religion that culminates by stabbing himself in the chest while lying upon the ground.[55] In addition to his religion Hidan has been gifted with immortality, and as such he is able to survive fatal injuries, such as decapitation. Despite this, Hidan needs to be connected to his body in order to control it. Kakuzu assists him in these instances by reattaching his limbs, allowing the wounds to heal with time. Hidan’s inability to die is also used to Kakuzu’s advantage, as he can attack Hidan all he wants without worrying about finding a new partner afterwards. Although the two dislike working together, this advantage makes them the ideal team.

During battle Hidan makes every attempt to acquire an opponent’s blood where, upon consuming it, he draws a symbol on the ground that “links” him with his opponent. Once this link is created Hidan takes on a grim reaper-like appearance and becomes what is essentially a voodoo doll for his opponent; any damage that is done to Hidan is also done to them. Hidan first uses this ability to give himself nonfatal injuries that bring him pleasure due to the pain it causes to him and the opponent. Once he is done toying with opponents in this way he stabs himself in the heart, killing them. Links can be broken prematurely if Hidan is removed from the safety of his symbol, though it can easily be reestablished by simply reentering its borders. After Hidan uses this ability to kill Asuma Sarutobi, Shikamaru Nara faces him in an attempt to gain revenge. Hidan is unable to form a link with Shikamaru and eventually falls into one of Shikamaru’s traps. With Hidan captured, Shikamaru blows him up and buries the still-speaking remains under a pile of rubble. While his actual status is currently unknown, Akatsuki no longer considers him a member.[56]

Hinata Hyuga

Hinata Hyuga (日向ヒナタ Hyūga Hinata?) is the eldest daughter of the Hyuga clan’s main branch, and thus is the heiress of the clan. Her father trained her to use the clan’s more basic abilities such as the Gentle Fist style of combat, though in time he came to deem her a lost cause and abandoned her to Kurenai’s care as he began training her younger sister instead. Throughout her early time in Team 8, Hinata’s lack of self-confidence and unwillingness to fight bring her failure in every mission she is assigned. In an attempt to change herself Hinata enters the Chunin Exams, where she is forced to fight against her cousin, Neji Hyuga. Although Neji easily outmatches her and taunts her for the battle’s duration, Hinata perseveres in an attempt to prove her own worth. After recovering from the wounds she receives, Hinata continues training to improve herself. Her efforts eventually allow her to acquire a better relationship with her father, who encourages her to continue working on improving herself.

Hinata has a long-standing crush on Naruto Uzumaki, which has been present since their time in the Academy. Her feelings for him are rooted in his determination, confidence, and strength, all of which she feels she lacks. Despite her rather obvious feelings, Hinata has yet to openly admit that she likes Naruto, though many characters have been shown to be aware of it. Similarly, Naruto has remained completely oblivious to Hinata’s feelings, identifying her blushing as just her being weird, though he now enjoys her company more than he once did. Hinata tends to break away from her usually timid self when around Naruto, such as going out of her way to help him or putting more effort into something because he is nearby. She also becomes more assertive on Naruto’s behalf and never hesitates to defend him, even to himself. Naruto also acts as a key component in her quest to better herself, as she trains so that she can be like him and impress him at the same time.

In the anime, her training eventually results in her creation of Protection of the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms (守護八卦六十四掌 Shugohakke Rokujūyon Shō?), a combination of the Hyuga clan’s more powerful techniques. With it, Hinata creates blades of chakra that she can use to hit any target in her Byakugan’s field of vision. Due to the speed at which these blades move as well as the amount of control she has over them, Hinata can use this technique to attack and defend simultaneously.

Before her appearance Masashi Kishimoto had intended not to make her a ninja and to give her normal clothes instead of the Hyuga clothes.[5]

Hizashi Hyuga

Hizashi Hyuga (日向 ヒザシ Hyūga Hizashi?) was the twin brother of Hiashi Hyuga. Because he was born second he became a member of the Hyuga clan’s branch house, a fate his son, Neji Hyuga, would someday share. While Hizashi had always resented the main house due to its treatment of branch house members as servants, the birth of Neji brought his hate to new heights; as a branch house member, Neji was not allowed to learn the clan’s most secret techniques, a deprivation of his natural talent. Angered by this, Hizashi began to outwardly display his hate for the main house and its members, earning him many reprimands.

When Hiashi killed a Kumogakure diplomat to save his daughter, Hinata Hyuga, Kumogakure demanded his corpse. Not wanting to sacrifice the main house’s leader, the clan’s elders nominated Hizashi as his replacement, knowing Kumogakure would be unable to tell the difference. Although Hiashi was reluctant to send his brother to such a fate, Hizashi insisted, wanting to have the opportunity to choose his own fate; rather than going to die to save a member of the main house, Hizashi was choosing to die to save the life of his brother. Before going to his death, he asked Hiashi to tell Neji the reason for his decision, hoping that Neji too would one day have a chance to change his destiny.

I letter characters in Naruto:

Ibiki Morino

Ibiki Morino (森乃 イビキ Morino Ibiki?) is the examiner for the first part of the Chunin Exams. Ibiki’s head is covered to hide a number of old wounds he received during a past torture interrogation he was forced to endure. He is the commanding officer of the Konoha ANBU Torture and Interrogation Force (木ノ葉暗部拷問・尋問部隊 Konoha Anbu Gomon/Jinmon Butai?), and is the designer of the Chunin Exam’s first test. Described as a sadist by some, Ibiki has the ability to subject people to great suffering without ever using physical torture. His interrogational skills rely solely on his capability to torture the mind. He has complete knowledge of human psychology; by attacking a person’s mind, he can gain control over their spirit. His abilities are called upon a number of times in Part II as Konoha gains a need to extract information on Akatsuki from others.

Land of Waves villagers

The villagers of the Land of Waves enjoyed a life of freedom, prosperity, and happiness for many years prior to the start of the series. A foreigner to the country, Kaiza (カイザ) was viewed as a hero by the citizens and inspired hope in all around him. After Gato came to the Land of Waves, the citizens were suppressed and the country fell into poverty. Kaiza spoke out against Gato and the affects he was having on the Land of Waves, yet was executed for it. Kaiza’s death broke the villagers of the Land of Waves’ spirit, and they fell into acceptance of the life they lived.

Tazuna (タズナ), angered by Gato’s influence on the country, began building a bridge that would connect the Land of Waves to the mainland. Although few wished to join him in the project due to fear of Gato’s retribution, progress was slowly made. Fearing the impact the bridge would have on his business, Gato hires Zabuza Momochi to assassinate Tazuna. Tazuna, likewise, hires Team 7 to protect him, and his bodyguards frequently clash with Zabuza.

As the bridge nears completion Gato, dissatisfied with Zabuza’s progress, takes the matter into his own hands and hires a small army of thugs to kill Tazuna. Tazuna’s grandson, Inari (イナリ), inspired by the dedication of his grandfather, the members of Team 7, and the things taught to him by Kaiza, rallies the people of the Land of Waves together to fight back. Gato is killed and his thugs are driven off, allowing the bridge to be completed and returning the Land of Waves and its people to their former life of happiness.

Inari (in the paragraph above)

Ino Yamanaka

Ino Yamanaka (山中いの Yamanaka Ino?) is a childhood friend of Sakura Haruno. Sakura was often picked on due to her sensitivity about her large forehead, though through Ino’s influence, she was able to overcome this and develop her own identity. As Sakura’s confidence in herself grew she became aware that Ino liked the same boy as she did: Sasuke Uchiha. Sakura soon ended their friendship so that the two could properly compete for Sasuke’s affection, beginning a bitter rivalry between them. The two maintain this rivalry until the end of their match in the Chunin Exam, after which they begin to rekindle their friendship. Nevertheless, the two maintain a competitive relationship and constantly attempt to outdo the other. During their feud she became superficial, thinking highly of her looks and having no problem telling people what she thinks, such as telling Choji that he should focus more on his appearance because girls dislike overweight boys. Although both of her teammates fit the profiles of people she wouldn’t associate with because of her apparent shallowness (Choji for his appearance and Shikamaru for his laziness), she actually cares deeply for their well-beings and maintains a strong bond with them.

As a member of the Yamanaka clan, Ino works in her family’s flower shop and has become particularly talented in ikebana. The anime’s filler arcs show that she’s been able to find other uses for her time in the shop and can tell a person’s profession by simply glancing at the condition of their hands. Being a Yamanaka, she specializes in mind-altering jutsu. With the Mind Body Switch Technique, Ino can transfer to another’s body (even animals as seen in Part II) and control it as her own for a short period of time. Despite the number of times she has used this ability, the slow speed and very nature of the jutsu has caused her to have little success when using it. Over the timeskip she acquires the ability to use medical jutsu. While this is not explained in the manga, the anime shows it to be a result of Ino finding herself to be of no use to her teammates in direct combat. As such, Ino becomes Tsunade’s secondary apprentice in learning medical abilities, hoping to be more useful to her friends.

Iruka Umino

Iruka Umino (うみの イルカ Umino Iruka?) is an instructor at the Ninja Academy. He is characterized by the distinctive scar across his face that he has had since childhood. His parents were killed by the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox when he was younger, though he holds no hostility towards its container, Naruto Uzumaki. In fact, Iruka is one of the few people at the start of the series who values Naruto as a person, being able to relate with Naruto’s methods of trying to gain attention. Because he, like Naruto, was forced to grow up without parents, and was socially isolated as a result, he can relate to Naruto in this regard as well and has assumed the role as Naruto’s father-figure. Once Naruto becomes a ninja Iruka starts to underestimate Naruto, and as such become overprotective of him, though he in time discovers that Naruto has all the makings to become a great ninja.

When first designing Iruka, Masashi Kishimoto gave him “evil” looking eyes and sharper cheekbones. He ultimately decided to give Iruka a younger, more relaxed-looking face. [9]

Despite his lack of appearances in the series, Iruka always appears in the Top Ten of the Shonen Jump popularity polls.[7]

Itachi Uchiha

Itachi Uchiha (うちは イタチ Uchiha Itachi?) is a missing-nin from Konohagakure and is partnered with Kisame Hoshigaki. During his time in Konoha, Itachi’s prodigious talents and rapid development into a skilled ninja earned great attention from his family, the Uchiha clan.[12] His skills were such that his family focused all of its attention on him, ignoring Itachi’s younger brother, Sasuke Uchiha, in the process. Over time Itachi began to distance himself from the village and his family, eventually becoming a prime suspect in the death of his best friend, Shisui Uchiha. Before the death could be properly investigated, Itachi killed all the members of the Uchiha clan in a single night so that he could “test [his] ability”.[13]Itachi decided to spare Sasuke, however, stating that he was not worth killing; instead, prior to leaving, Itachi told Sasuke to live hating him and to grow strong enough to avenge the clan. At some point in time Itachi joined Akatsuki. While it stands to reason that he joined after massacring the Uchiha clan, the timeline that has been given throughout the series coupled with his age suggests that he joined the organization prior to killing his clan.

Despite his status as a wanted criminal and murderer, Itachi does not display any open enjoyment of violence or combat. Itachi instead prefers to avoid battle or, if that is not possible, end it as quickly as possible while exerting as little effort as he can.[14] When he does fight Itachi remains stationary, attacking only in defense and to otherwise avoid damage. He also studies an opponent’s movements with his Sharingan eyes, using them to properly assess an opponent’s actions and respond accordingly. His Sharingan is further enhanced when he activates his Mangekyo Sharingan, the strongest ability a member of the Uchiha clan can gain, which he acquired after he killed Shisui Uchiha.[15] With it, Itachi is able to utilize attacks such as Tsukuyomi (月読 literally “Moon Reader”?), a genjutsu that can torture an opponent for what seems like days in a matter of moments. Although these abilities are capable of defeating even the strongest opponents, it has been suggested that he is losing his eyesight as a result of repeated use.[16] Itachi is also very adept with standard genjutsu, and can trap others within an illusion by merely pointing or looking at them,[17] as well as turning their own genjutsu against them. It’s stated by Sasuke that Itachi’s signature genjutsu involves crows. He is also noted to be extremely fast with his techniques and movements, extending to his hand signs and weaponry as well. [18]
