Jirobo
- Age: 14[4] (deceased)
- Seiyu: Kenta Miyake
- Voice actor Michael Sorich
Jirobo (次郎坊 Jirōbō?) is the physically strongest member of the Sound Four, albeit the least powerful, according to the other members. His strength is such that, through simple physical attacks, Jirobo can defeat an opponent in one or two blows. He is even capable of lifting boulder-sized rocks with ease and hurling them across long distances. Jirobo is noticeably fat, though takes offense to this when Tayuya calls him as such and always scolds her for it. Because he is able to absorb the chakra of others, Jirobo often captures opponents so that he can absorb their chakra as a form of sustenance.
Jirobo is drawn into battle with Choji Akimichi during the Sasuke Retrieval arc, who he calls fat near-constantly during their battle. This, as well as Jirobo’s insults of Shikamaru Nara, causes Choji to utilize his trump card, drastically increasing his strength. Despite Jirobo’s best attempts, Choji’s strength outmatches his own and he is killed with a blow to the chest.
Jirobo was the third member of the Sound Four to be created by Masashi Kishimoto, a result of Kishimoto’s desire to have a large character in the group who was very different from the other members.[2]
Jugo
Jugo (重吾 Jūgo?) is the largest member of “Snake.” He is mentally unstable, sporadically fluctuating between a bloodthirsty and a docile personality. While in the former mindset, Jugo attacks anyone around him with the intention to kill, sometimes determining which gender he will kill first during conversations with himself. It is because of this uncontrollable drive for blood that Jugo, while docile, consents to being confined since he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Kimimaro Kaguya was able to control Jugo during these outbreaks, allowing him to assume a somewhat natural lifestyle where he viewed Kimimaro as a friend. After hearing that Kimimaro sacrificed his life for Sasuke, Jugo agreed to accompany Sasuke since he believes that Kimimaro’s spirit continues to live on in Sasuke.
Jugo is the source and means behind Orochimaru’s development of the cursed seals. Some time in the past, Jugo purposely sought out Orochimaru to cure him of his “impulses.” Jugo has trouble controlling his rage, which unexpectedly causes him to transform into a berserk demon. Upon examination, Orochimaru was able to isolate enzymes in Jugo’s blood as the cause of this change. By extracting these enzymes, Orochimaru was able to use them to produce similar, but more controlled, effects in other people. When assuming one of these cursed seal transformations, Jugo is able to exercise a great deal of control over it. In addition to being able to transform only portions of his body, Jugo can alter his transformation to better suit a situation. Jugo is also able to understand animals, using them as scouts and to help him accomplish tasks. It is unknown if this is a trait of his enzymes.

Kabuto Yakushi
- Age: 19[3]-20[4] in Part I, 22 in Part II
- Rank: Missing-nin
- Seiyu: Nobutoshi Kanna
- Voice Actor: Henry Dittman
Kabuto Yakushi (薬師カブト Yakushi Kabuto?) is Orochimaru’s personal medic, assistant, and general right-hand man. Kabuto was found as a young boy by a chief medical officer of the Konoha Medical Unit Squad. The officer brought Kabuto with him back to Konoha and raised him as a son. Kabuto eventually began acting as a spy for numerous countries and organizations (such as Akatsuki) before coming under the servitude of Orochimaru. Kabuto has since used his various former affiliations as a means to gather intelligence on Orochimaru’s behalf, such as entering the Chunin Exams as a Konoha ninja to gather information on his fellow participants for Orochimaru’s use. Despite his apparent loyalty to Orochimaru, Kabuto’s true personality is difficult to discern; he frequently switches from a lighthearted and polite teenager to a twisted and sadistic maniac that enjoys playing mind games with his opponents. While he generally obeys Orochimaru’s orders, he is not above healing Orochimaru’s enemies or trying to strike up polite conversations with Naruto Uzumaki when they meet. Orochimaru himself seems to have a hard time determining Kabuto’s thoughts, and has suggested that Kabuto secretly works against him.
Kabuto is a talented ninja, being compared to Kakashi Hatake in ability on more than one occasion, as well as being shown capable of killing ANBU members with relative ease. The bulk of Kabuto’s fighting ability lies in the medical jutsu taught to him by his adoptive father. These abilities have been further enhanced through his allegiance to Orochimaru, as he has been able to experiment on others to increase his medical knowledge. As a result, Kabuto is able to reactivate dead cells in a concentrated area and grow new ones. While he uses this ability in battle to immediately recover from attacks, it can also be used during his experiments to keep test subjects alive for much longer than is feasible. Kabuto can even temporarily reanimate a corpse for use as an ally or a decoy. During his battle with Tsunade, she remarks that his fighting and healing abilities surpass her own when she was his age. Despite his talents, Kabuto has always served others, a fate he is dissatisfied with. As such, after Orochimaru’s defeat, Kabuto integrates his master’s remains into his body as a means to become more powerful and to no longer be the mere tool of others. The remains have since begun trying to take over his body.
Land of Waves villagers
The villagers of the Land of Waves enjoyed a life of freedom, prosperity, and happiness for many years prior to the start of the series. A foreigner to the country, Kaiza (カイザ) was viewed as a hero by the citizens and inspired hope in all around him. After Gato came to the Land of Waves, the citizens were suppressed and the country fell into poverty. Kaiza spoke out against Gato and the affects he was having on the Land of Waves, yet was executed for it. Kaiza’s death broke the villagers of the Land of Waves’ spirit, and they fell into acceptance of the life they lived.
Tazuna (タズナ), angered by Gato’s influence on the country, began building a bridge that would connect the Land of Waves to the mainland. Although few wished to join him in the project due to fear of Gato’s retribution, progress was slowly made. Fearing the impact the bridge would have on his business, Gato hires Zabuza Momochi to assassinate Tazuna. Tazuna, likewise, hires Team 7 to protect him, and his bodyguards frequently clash with Zabuza.
As the bridge nears completion Gato, dissatisfied with Zabuza’s progress, takes the matter into his own hands and hires a small army of thugs to kill Tazuna. Tazuna’s grandson, Inari (イナリ), inspired by the dedication of his grandfather, the members of Team 7, and the things taught to him by Kaiza, rallies the people of the Land of Waves together to fight back. Gato is killed and his thugs are driven off, allowing the bridge to be completed and returning the Land of Waves and its people to their former life of happiness.

Kakuzu
- Partner: Formerly Hidan
Kakuzu (角都?) is a missing-nin from Takigakure and Hidan’s partner. He is a greedy individual, prioritizing things in terms of how much they are worth and finding money to be the only thing that he can depend on.[59] Kakuzu’s favorite source of income is collecting bounties, and he has even memorized the worth and information on some of the more dangerous targets. Due to this view of money, Kakuzu refers to himself as the “Treasurer of Akatsuki”,[59] though it is unknown if this is an actual position. Despite finding Akatsuki to be a good source of income, Kakuzu greatly dislikes the fact that he needs a teammate, due in part to his habit of killing anyone near him (partners included) when enraged.[60] Having killed all of his previous partners as a result of this, Kakuzu was partnered with Hidan. Although neither enjoys being paired together, Hidan’s immortality makes him the ideal teammate for Kakuzu.
Kakuzu’s body is composed of a great deal of thick black threads that he can use to detach his limbs for long-range assaults. The threads themselves are also capable of piercing flesh, which Kakuzu uses to remove the still-beating hearts from his enemies. By integrating these younger, healthier hearts into his body (being able to have a maximum of four spares at any given time), Kakuzu can theoretically extend his life indefinitely.[61] He keeps these spare hearts stored within animal masks sewn to his back, and each of the masks can separate from his body and attack independently. Once removed from his body, the masks can shoot powerful elemental blasts at opponents. If the heart in Kakuzu’s body is destroyed, one of the masks can remerge with him so that he can take use of its heart, causing the mask to crumble away.[62] Kakuzu also has an earth-based defensive technique that makes him virtually immune to physical attacks. Kakuzu’s masks are slowly destroyed at the hands of a group of Konohagakure ninja; Naruto Uzumaki is able to destroy two of his hearts simultaneously and bring a third to the brink of failure. Although Kakuzu survives Naruto’s attack, he is left unable to move, allowing him to easily be finished off by Kakashi Hatake.
Kankuro
- Age: 14[3]-15[4] in Part I, 17 in Part II
- Rank: Jonin
- Seiyu: Yasuyuki Kase
- Voice actor: Michael Lindsay
Kankuro (カンクロウ Kankurō?) is initially characterized by his apparent dislike for children, as seen when he is noticeably irritated while in the presence of someone younger than him. Though, this seems to have gone away as time passed by. This is most evident when he is with Gaara, who Kankuro is forced to put up with due to the fear his younger brother imposes on him. Despite their apparent differences, Gaara and Kankuro become very close over the timeskip as Gaara begins to confide in Kankuro and shares his dreams of wanting to risk his life to protect Sunagakure. As such, Kankuro has become very protective of Gaara, willing to challenge anyone who puts Gaara down in his presence. When Gaara is captured by Akatsuki, Kankuro rushes to his brother’s aid in an attempt to save him and even after being nearly killed as a result he does not falter in his resolve to find Gaara.
Kankuro is a talented puppeteer, and with each of his appearances in the major arcs is seen with a new puppet in his arsenal. The three puppets that have been introduced were all originally created by Sasori, and came into Kankuro’s possession some time after the former left Sunagakure. Karasu (烏? “Crow”), the first of Kankuro’s puppets to make an appearance, has been heavily modified by Kankuro. Because of this it is highly offensive, having numerous concealed weapons and being able to detach any of its limbs for separate attacks. Kuroari (黒蟻? “Black Ant”), the second of Kankuro’s puppets to make an appearance, is used to capture opponents for assassination purposes. Once an opponent is captured within it each of Kuroari’s arms convert to saw-blades and slice through the confined opponent. Sanshouo (山椒魚 Sanshōuo?, “Salamander”), the third of Kankuro’s puppets to make an appearance, is not seen in action in the manga. In the anime, Sanshouo is shown to have a hollow body that Kankuro can take cover in to defend against attacks. These puppets seem to be designed to work together to some degree, as Kankuro frequently uses them in tandem to increase their effectiveness. Karasu, for example, can blanket an area in smoke while Kuroari fires weapons at the blinded opponent.
Karin
Karin (香燐) is a former subordinate of Orochimaru who assisted him in his experimentations and was left in charge of one of his bases while he was away. After learning of his death she remains loyal to him by keeping the prisoners of the base in check. Karin has red eyes, matching hair color and an unusual hairstyle; her hair is short and unkempt on one side, and long and combed on the other. She will at times appear tough and in control, particularly when Suigetsu or Jugo are present. When Sasuke Uchiha is around, however, she switches to a flirtatious personality where she tends to imply a team consisting of only the two of them would be considerably better. She has a dramatic and sometimes almost obsessive interest in Sasuke, as she goes so far as to keep one of his battered, sweat-drenched shirts for herself and plans to “ravage” him after everyone falls asleep.
Karin’s special ability allows her to track specific individuals through chakra, as seen when she is able to discern that Jugo is not among a crowd of prisoners through the standard concentration pose for molding chakra. It also allows her to pick up chakra from long distances and notice changes in an individual’s chakra. Kakashi Hatake surmises that Karin is a particularly skilled chakra-sensing ninja, as she is not only able to tell that his group is approaching, but can also sense how many of them are present and that one is a dog.
Kiba Inuzuka
- Age: 12[3]-13[4] in Part I, 15 in Part II
- Rank: Chunin
- Seiyu: Kōsuke Toriumi
- Voice actor: Kyle Hebert
Kiba Inuzuka (犬塚キバ Inuzuka Kiba?) is characterized by his almost symbiotic relationship with his dog Akamaru, as the two are always seen together. Kiba is extremely devoted to Akamaru, and he is more than willing to risk his own life if it means saving Akamaru. Kiba has acquired a few dog-like qualities from the time he has spent with Akamaru, such as being able to understand Akamaru’s barking and disliking any food that he can’t chew on. He is also very loyal, and despite often being overconfident, he cares deeply for his teammates’ well-beings. This is most evident in his attempts to remove his teammates from harm’s way as well as his constant attempts to avoid hampering his teammates’ progress.
Akamaru also acts as a valuable ally in battle, joining Kiba in attacking opponents and using his heightened senses to help Kiba find things. Because Akamaru is naturally better equipped for combat, Kiba typically starts a battle by using Four Legs Technique (四脚の術 Shikyaku no Jutsu?, English TV “Beast Mimicry: All-Fours Jutsu”) to make himself more animalistic. Predominately, this jutsu increases his speed and strength, lengthens his nails to claw-like quality, and, as the name suggests, causes him to travel using his arms and legs. Kiba also can gather chakra to his nose to exponentially increase his sense of smell, allowing him to pick up on the faintest of scents. In Part II he becomes so proficient with this sense of smell that he can track things down that actual dogs cannot. Once Kiba and Akamaru are on an even footing the two combine efforts to perform spinning physical attacks that inflict multiple wounds to opponents. They often join together in transformation as well, such as using Man Beast Combination Transformation: Double-Headed Wolf (人獣混合変化・双頭狼 Jinjū Konbi Henge: Sōtōrō?, English TV “Man-Beast Transformation Combo: Two-Headed Wolf”) to become a single, large, two-headed wolf that can attack others with blinding force and speed. Because Akamaru lacks his own chakra reserves, Kiba must provide the chakra necessary for these transformations.
Kidomaru
- Age: 14[4] (deceased)
- Seiyu: Susumu Chiba
- Voice Actor: Peter Lurie
Kidomaru (鬼童丸 Kidōmaru?) is the spider-like member of the Sound Four; he possesses four extra arms, has the ability to make webs, and even possesses a third eye. This eye (normally covered by his forehead protector) improves the accuracy of his attacks to the point of being unavoidable. Kidomaru’s webbing is made of a special type of liquid that is created by infusing body liquid with chakra, making it as strong as steel. The more basic form of this webbing is excreted from his mouth, and he spits it directly from there during combat to capture opponents. Kidomaru can create a stronger, golden webbing called Spider Sticky Gold (蜘蛛粘金 Kumo Nenkin?, English TV: “Sticky Spider Thread”) that hardens upon contact with oxygen to metal-like quality. Because of the solid nature of this webbing, Kidomaru can shape it into armor or weapons to aid him in battle.
Kidomaru is an excellent tactical analyst, making sure each of his attacks is put to use in determining an enemy’s weak point. During his battle with Neji Hyuga, for example, he is able to slowly pick up on a blindspot in Neji’s defenses, and proceeds to focus his attacks on that point. He generally sees a battle as a game, and often plays around with the opponent too much because he prefers to have fun seeing the opponent struggle. His speech also reflects this-he refers to Neji as a “trash character,” and claims that, like all trash characters, Neji will die first. Despite this claim, Neji is able to send a burst of chakra through one of Kidomaru’s webs during their battle, immobilizing him. Unable to defend himself, Kidomaru is attacked by Neji and soon dies from his wounds.
Kidomaru was the first member of the Sound Four to be created by Masashi Kishimoto.[2]
Kimimaro Kaguya
- Age: 15[4] (deceased)
- Seiyu: Toshiyuki Morikawa, Makoto Tsumura (child)
- Voice actor: Keith Silverstein, Kari Wahlgren (child)
Kimimaro Kaguya (かぐや君麻呂 Kaguya Kimimaro?) is the sole survivor of the Kaguya clan. Normally Kimimaro was locked in a cage in the Kaguya compound so much so that he questioned his purpose in life. However the Kaguya clan kept Kimimaro locked up due to his immense combat potential. Kimimaro inherited all of the families bloodline abilities and apparently was the strongest member of his clan even at a young age. Thus he was only let out of his cage for the most difficult battles. After his clan was killed, Kimimaro was found by Orochimaru. Kimimaro proceeds to develop a strong devotion towards Orochimaru, viewing him as the only person who cared for him. In his devotion to Orochimaru, Kimimaro stops at nothing to ensure the continuation of his master’s dreams and ambitions. To this effect he willingly kills any who oppose or hinder Orochimaru’s progress, and even offers himself as a future host for Orochimaru’s soul.
The Kaguya clan’s kekkei genkai, Shikotsumyaku (屍骨脈 literally?, “Dead Bone Pulse”), gives Kimimaro the ability to manipulate his skeletal structure. An example of this ability is seen when Kimimaro fires his finger bones from his hands like bullets. Any injuries the skin receives during the process are instantly healed and replacement bones are created to restore the use of his hands. This ability can be used to sprout bones from any point on his body, giving him a quick defense against physical attacks by covering himself in spikes. Kimimaro can increase the strength of these bones to steel-like quality, a trait he often takes advantage of when using his bones as a sword. Kimimaro has also shown to be a very proficient Taijutsu user, able to predict and avoid almost any physical attack with ease.
Kimimaro’s only weakness is a terminal illness that he constantly suffers from, which, in addition to making him unable to battle, makes it impossible for him to act as a host for Orochimaru. When Orochimaru is left in need of a new body, Kimimaro, ignoring his illness, sets out to retrieve a replacement: Sasuke Uchiha. Before he can complete his task, however, he is forced into battle with Rock Lee and Gaara. Just as he is about to kill them both, he succumbs to his illness and dies, unable to fulfill his master’s wish.
Kin Tsuchi
- Age: 14[3] (deceased)
- Rank: Genin
- Seiyu: Akiko Koike
- Voice actor: Stephanie Sheh
Kin Tsuchi (キン・ツチ) uses bells in battle; by throwing bells attached to needles at her opponent, she can ring them by an attached string. The bells ring at a frequency that directly affects the brain, causing the opponent to see multiple copies of her and making it nearly impossible for them to find the real Kin. With increased exposure to the ringing, an opponent can start losing their motor functions. Neither of Kin’s teammates seems to be concerned about her, as both readily attack her when her body is taken over by Ino Yamanaka. After Kin loses in the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exam to Shikamaru Nara, Orochimaru sacrifices her so that he can resurrect the Second Hokage.
Kisame Hoshigaki
- Age: 29[11] in Part I, 31 in Part II
- Partner: Itachi Uchiha
- Seiyu: Tomoyuki Dan
- Voice actor: Kirk Thornton
Kisame Hoshigaki (干柿鬼鮫 Hoshigaki Kisame?) is a missing-nin from Kirigakure and is partnered with Itachi Uchiha. He gets along considerably better with Itachi than most Akatsuki members do with their own partners, immediately doing as Itachi asks of him and always looking out for Itachi’s well-being. His former country, the Land of Water, now seeks him out for plotting to overthrow its government and being involved in numerous assassinations.[20] When he was still loyal to Kirigakure, he was one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, a group of ninja that wield particularly large weapons in battle.[21] Kisame’s weapon is called Samehada (鮫肌, “shark skin”), a scale-covered sword that shaves off skin instead of cutting and is capable of absorbing untold amounts of chakra. Samehada only allows Kisame to wield it; if anyone else tries to pick it up, spikes protrude from its handle and it returns to Kisame’s side.[22] Like other characters who have trained to be one of the Seven Swordsmen, Kisame enjoys mutilating his opponents, as seen when he suggests cutting off Naruto Uzumaki’s legs to make him easier to carry.[23]
Kisame has a distinctive shark-like appearance, complete with pale blue skin, small white eyes, gill-like facial structures, and sharp triangular teeth. Even his name, Kisame (鬼鮫), means “demon shark”. His shark-like qualities carry over to the type of techniques he uses in battle, as he often shapes bodies of water into the forms of sharks that proceed to attack opponents.[24][25] If there is no water source where he happens to be fighting, Kisame can use Water Release: Exploding Water Shockwave (水遁・爆水衝波 Suiton: Bakusui Shōha?) to create a lake’s worth of water to be used for attacks.[26] Kisame is also noted to have a particularly large reserve of chakra; even when he fights at 30% power in one instance his chakra supply is compared to that of a Nine-Tailed Demon Fox-enhanced Naruto Uzumaki.[27]
Konan
- Partner: Pain
Konan (小南?) is the only female ninja in Akatsuki. She is also the only member to call her partner and the Akatsuki leader, Pain, by his name. When she was younger, Konan, Nagato, and Yahiko were left orphaned by one of Amegakure’s many wars, forcing them to fend for themselves. The three eventually encountered Jiraiya, who looked after them and taught them basic ninjutsu. Jiraiya had believed Konan to have died with Nagato and Yahiko some time later.
Konan has a natural talent for origami, as seen with the paper flower she keeps in her hair. This talent extends to her type of jutsu, as she can divide her body into countless numbers of paper sheets. These sheets can be controlled individually and formed into various shapes for a number of purposes, such as butterflies for scouting or generic weapons for attack. Konan can even form wings that mirror her title as “God’s Angel” amongst the villagers of Amegakure, as she often carries out Pain’s will.[28] Her abilities are constrained while wet, as paper clings to itself and loses its stiffness.[29]
Konohamaru
- Age: 8[1]-9[2] in Part I, 11 in Part II
- Rank: Genin
- Seiyu: Ikue Otani in Part I, Akiko Koike in Part II
- Voice actor: Colleen O’Shaughnessey
Konohamaru (木ノ葉丸), named after the village of Konoha, is the grandson of the Third Hokage and by extension the nephew of Asuma Sarutobi. At the start of the series, Konohamaru feels unacknowledged due to his status as the Hokage’s grandson. As such, he frequently attempts to defeat his grandfather in battle so that he can become Hokage himself and earn the recognition he desires. Once meeting Naruto Uzumaki, Konohamaru realizes that he can’t become Hokage by simply attacking his grandfather and that he will need to train hard to accomplish this goal. To help him in this regard Konohamaru begins to view Naruto as a role model, acquiring his determination, fiery attitude, and unique way of ending sentences, “kore” (コレ, a laughing signal or appreciation), much like Naruto’s “Dattebayo!”
Konohamaru’s most obvious acquisition from Naruto’s influence is his perverted habits, specifically the perverted jutsu he uses. After their first meeting Konohamaru becomes Naruto’s disciple in an attempt to learn the Sexy Technique and defeat his grandfather. After mastering the ability he begins to train to create his own perverted jutsu. After learning the Shadow Clone Technique in Part II, Konohamaru creates variants of the Sexy Technique; by transforming himself and a shadow clone into naked people of the same gender that hug in a suggestive embrace, he can win over anyone of the opposite gender. His tutor and eventual team leader, Ebisu, disapproves of these perverted tendencies.
Konohamaru’s design caused great difficulties for Masashi Kishimoto; he intended for Konohamaru to look like a “punk” smaller than Naruto, yet all of his attempts resulted in a mere recreation of Naruto. He tried giving Konohamaru a variety of other faces, but all reminded Kishimoto of someone else. He eventually gave Konohamaru small, angry-looking eyes, and instantly knew he’d found what he wanted.[3]
Kurenai Yuhi
- Age: 27[3]-28[4] in Part I, 30 in Part II
- Rank: Jonin
- Seiyu: Rumi Ochiai
- Voice actor: Saffron Henderson (Episode 3), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Episode 20+)
Kurenai Yuhi (夕日紅 Yūhi Kurenai?) is the leader of Team 8. Kurenai acted as an Academy Instructor for many years, eventually becoming a Jonin soon before the start of the series. Once Team 8 was formed, Hinata Hyuga was left in her care, Hinata’s father having little use for her. Kurenai has since begun to act as a parent for Hinata and tries to help her in overcoming her own weaknesses. Kurenai has a long-standing relationship with Asuma Sarutobi, with whom she frequently appears. Despite this, the two deny being an item and try to write off the amount of time they spend together, though numerous characters suspect otherwise. In Part II the revelation that Kurenai is pregnant with Asuma’s child makes their relationship clear.
Kurenai specializes in genjutsu, and as seen in the anime is very proficient with it. Through the use of Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind Death (魔幻・樹縛殺 Magen: Jubaku Satsu?), Kurenai can disappear and sneak up on an opponent unnoticed. Once she has done so she creates the illusion of a tree growing around the opponent to effectively immobilize them, allowing her to appear from the tree to kill them as she pleases. The Kurama Clan arc shows Kurenai capable of using this jutsu multiple times in a row, as well as being able to create any kind of foliage with which to capture the opponent.
Kushina Uzumaki
- Age: ? (presumed deceased)
Kushina Uzumaki (うずまき クシナ Uzumaki Kushina?) is a ninja of the former Land of the Whirlpool. She had a son, Naruto Uzumaki, with the Hokage of the time, Minato Namikaze. She is noted to have had a brash, tomboyish demeanor, long red hair, and as time passed, blossomed into a very beautiful woman. Despite Naruto’s close resemblance to his father, much of his personality and choice of ninjutsu are said to be similar to that of his mother’s. She is presumed to be dead, as she is described in past tense.[10]
L characters in Naruto:
There are no characters in Naruto starting with the letter L.
M characters in Naruto:
Madara Uchiha
Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ Uchiha Madara?) founded the Uchiha clan during the early days of Konoha. He did battle with and was defeated by the First Hokage at the Valley of the End. Jiraiya suspects that Madara summoned the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox to attack Konoha years before the start of the series, though the age Madara would have been at the time causes him to question this assumption. Nevertheless, the demon fox seems to be familiar with Madara, comparing Sasuke Uchiha’s eyes and chakra to that of Madara’s. Akatsuki member Tobi refers to himself as Madara Uchiha.
Snakes
Snakes are the signature summons of Orochimaru and his two former students, Anko Mitarashi and Sasuke Uchiha. They vary greatly in size, from small enough to hide in one’s sleeves to larger than most buildings. Orochimaru frequently summons them as allies in battle, either having them attack for him or instructing them to carry out other tasks. Despite this, he treats them as disposable pawns, typically sending them into battles during which they are likely to be killed. While most snakes are very obedient and do what is instructed of them, the largest snake, Manda (マンダ), will not help others without payment. He will only help Orochimaru if a hundred human sacrifices are offered to him, yet even then would readily turn against Orochimaru if he thought he could win. Sasuke summons Manda in Part II to act as a shield from a large blast, and after cursing Sasuke for using him as such he dies of the injuries he sustains.
Manda (in the paragraph above)
Matsuri
- Seiyu: Maaya Sakamoto
Matsuri is one of the first students of the Sunagakure ninja school modeled after the one in Konoha. She chooses Gaara as her teacher, despite his lingering status as the village’s weapon. When it comes time to begin training her with a weapon, Gaara suggests she uses a jouhyou, it being the safest of all the available options. She is initially fearful of weapons after the murders of her parents, yet becomes accustomed to them after realizing they can be used to help others. She is the first of the anime’s filler characters to make an appearance in Naruto: Shippuden, where she joins a Sunagakure rescue team meant to rescue Gaara after his capture. She becomes somewhat outspoken over the timeskip, as she complains when her team spends its time protecting Sunagakure’s borders rather than trying to save Gaara. She later appears during Gaara’s revival, praising him and boasting about his powers.
Might Guy
- Age: 26[3]-27[4]in Part I, 29 in Part II
- Rank: Jonin
- Seiyu: Masashi Ebara
- Voice actor: Skip Stellrecht
Might Guy (マイト・ガイ Maito Gai?) is the leader of Team Guy, though much of his time with this team is focused on Rock Lee. Because Lee’s goal in life is to master taijutsu, Guy’s goal has become to help Lee achieve this dream, dedicating his free time to teaching Lee all that he knows about taijutsu. Because of Guy’s dedication to Lee, Lee has modeled himself in his sensei’s image, such as mimicking Guy’s distinctive green jumpsuit and shiny bowl haircut (having already had Guy’s characteristic thick eyebrows). Lee has also adopted Guy’s “nice guy pose,” which consists of giving a thumbs up, winking, and smiling with teeth so white they give the proverbial “ping.” This action is often used by both Guy and Lee to indicate commitment to a statement they had just made, their highest form of a promise. Guy, and by extension Lee, lives his life by his own “My Rules” philosophy, which involves setting tougher self-imposed penalties for failure in the belief that the punishment will make them stronger.
Guy specializes in using taijutsu, though unlike Lee, does so as a matter of preference on his part. Instead he simply chooses not to use ninjutsu or genjutsu, even going so far as to use a regular (albeit bad) disguise during one of the anime’s filler arcs instead of using the Transformation Technique. In the few instances that he has used ninjutsu, it has always been offscreen, such as when he summoned a large turtle prior to his first appearance. Through his mastery of taijutsu Guy specializes in the Strong Fist style of combat. Likewise, he can open at least six of the Eight Gates, with each gate giving him more power for short periods of time. As the self-proclaimed rival of Kakashi Hatake, Guy has developed an effective counter against Sharingan users: by focusing on their feet, Guy can both predict the movements of the enemy and negate the hypnotic abilities of the Sharingan that require eye contact.
Series creator Masashi Kishimoto states that Guy’s passionate and hot-blooded personality are much like that of a gym teacher he had in junior high school, though the teacher was not a model for Guy’s character. Kishimoto goes on to say that he probably wouldn’t get along with Guy, as Guy is too intense for him.[9]
Mizuki
- Age: 26[3]
- Seiyu: Shinichiro Miki
- Voice actor Michael Reisz (anime), Josh Keaton (Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2)
Mizuki (ミズキ) is a childhood friend and fellow Ninja Academy instructor of Iruka Umino. At the series’ start he tricks Naruto Uzumaki into stealing a scroll of forbidden jutsu, hoping to later steal the scroll from Naruto and use Naruto as a scapegoat in the meantime. Iruka eventually figures out what he’s up to and the two are drawn into battle. Using the Shadow Clone Technique he learned from the scroll, Naruto quickly defeats Mizuki as punishment for harming Iruka. The anime fillers reveals that Mizuki, as a former student of Orochimaru, stole the scroll so that he could give it to his master. Mizuki later escapes from his confinements in Konoha to seek out Orochimaru, a task he hopes to make easier by consuming a potion Orochimaru taught to him. While the potion briefly transforms him into a tiger-like beast with doubled speed and power, it ultimately turns him into an angry, shriveled, and powerless old man. Tsunade heals him back to his normal state and interrogates him about the whereabouts of Orochimaru, but learns nothing of any use.
